"That belongs in a museum!"
This page features items in my collection directly related to Raiders of the Lost Ark. When Raiders was released on June 12, 1981, Kenner Products already had a strong reputation with licensed toy lines of the Star Wars and Six Million Dollar Man properties. Since the company had one success with a George Lucas property, why not another?
In theory the toy line based on Raiders should have been a success but the first year figures that consisted of Indiana Jones, Marion Ravenwood, Toht and the Cairo Swordsman mismatched in production and packing to meet the big demand that resulted from the popularity of the film. The Indiana Jones and Marion figures were limited to two or three figures per case that were shipped to toy stores.
When the second series of action figures, consisting of the German Mechanic, Belloq, Sallah, Indiana Jones in German Uniform, and Belloq in Ceremonial Robe, was released, the extremely limited Indiana Jones and Marion figures from the first series were just not available to support the toy line, thus causing interest to wane.
Kenner really goofed on the marketing of the toy line. In fact, the Toht and Cairo Swordsman dominated the packing in shipments to toy outlets so much, the figures could be found on toy shelves 10 years after their release.
The action figures aren't the only collectibles to be had from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Several playsets were produced including a Well of the Souls, Streets of Cairo and Map Room as well as a Desert Convoy Truck and Arabian Horse.
The toys are obviously the hardest to come by due to their crossover collectibility but other items relating to Raiders of the Lost Ark are just as interesting and fun to collect. Items like comic books, records, trading cards, magazines, games and books can easily be found on any given day on auction Web sites.
Keep checking back because my collection is always growing. |
